From the information I've been able to find, National made two spools from 1914-1930, so that may help you get an approximate date for your machine if you go by your serial number. The manual is dated 10 '25 on the outside, and 6-26 on the inside. It is electric and they glued in a front page with instructions on using the motor and foot pedal. The thread guide is 45°, can type 3, the legs are set back, it came in a table, and has the little flipper to engage motor for bobbin winder.
The decals are beautiful! My only problem is the motor was shot, and finding a replacement has been a nightmare!
Since the motor shaft rides on the handwheel (with tires), the motor has to turn clockwise, except the only motors I can find turn CCW as they are meant to run with a belt. Can't wait to figure that part out so I can actually sew!! Thanks for keeping track of these unusual beauties!
If you are still cataloging I have come by a National Two Spool treadle. It has the original cam, a gorgeous burl case, and is one of the later models. My grandmother told me it was from around 1930, her grandmother's. The cam is the later style. I am setting to restoring it, but so far cannot locate the serial number in order to be able to know what sort of belt I'll need. The slide plate is of the later style as well, and has imprinting on it, but it's heavily corroded/rusted. I've been working all afternoon to remove the build up, but still can't locate the number on it.
The upper portion of the plate seems to contain patent info and dates. The lower half from what little I've uncovered seems to list fabric types and suggestions for settings and needles. Am I looking in the right spot for the serial number? Thank you for your help. I am almost in tears! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all this information you've given us!
If you'd like I will add my info. I'm so excited!!! I brought my National two spools treadle home about 6 months ago. She's not in the best of shape but because of you pictures and explanations I know that I have the right canister for the machine! My problem though is that it won't make a full rotation. I'm hoping it's the grime and the hardened grease that's making it not work. Here's her info: serial: H31508 badge: unknown can: 3 faceplate: horizontal cover plate: slide (1911-1913) winder: older (plain w/ no gizmo on it) leg: set back She's in a her own cabinet.(chain) not in the best of shape but not too bad.

I can send pic's if you'd like. Thank you again for all this info and your video's.
I've learned so much from you. = p.s.- If anyone would know why it won't do a full rotation please let me know. It is good to see someone making a list and documenting the Two Spool! I got mine many years ago, off ebay, (machine only, Western Electric motor which broke in shipping, and damaged some decal.) I almost bought another one that was located a few blocks from me in Saginaw MI but could not reach the expected price before it went to an Auction. It was in a treadle and had a second canister, too.
Mine is serial no. H17682 Badge: Western Electric Cover plate: pivot can type: 2 Bobbin winder, no extra part Leg: set back face plate, left one in the pic. I just brought home a National Two Spool and I have to admit I know nothing about them. I just wanted to rescue it from the thrift shop and hopefully sew with it. If not it will still be lovely for display!
Eldredge Sewing Machine Serial Numbers
Any tips pointers or websites/resources not commonly found on you’d recommend? Looks complete except the bobbin is missing. It has the casing like the first image on your other post, comparing three types. The Serial number is H8017, it has a pivot plate, and according to your photos, an older spool-winder arm. The faceplate has the horizontal bar. And I don’t see any marking in the treadle wheel.
Any help is much appreciated!!!!

Antique Sewing Machine Resource - Eldredge/National Machines HISTORY OF THE COMPANY Also a manufacturer of automobiles in the early 1900s, the National Sewing Machine Company was formed by the consolidation of two Illinois based manufacturers: the Eldredge and June companies. The Eldredge Sewing Machine Company was originally located in Chicago, Ill, and manufactured machines from 1869 through 1890. Also located in Illinois, the June Manufacturing Company manufactured sewing machines from 1881 through 1890. The National Sewing Machine Company was formed in 1890 from their consolidation. Machines in the company’s product line included both original designs and models copied from other manufacturers. However, unlike Singer or W&W, National only manufactured domestic use models.
National Sewing Machine Models
In 1924, the National sewing machine company bought all rights belonging to the Davis S.M. Most National sewing machines were “stenciled models’ manufactured for department stores, mail order companies, and retailers.
By the mid-1920s, the majority of National-made sewing machines were sold in this way. Like the other American sewing machine manufacturers, the National company suffered heavy losses with the introduction of European and Japanese sewing machines to the US market after the Second World War. National merged with The Free and the New Home companies in 1953. But the move was futile, and the resulting corporation could not keep up with the new competition and eventually went bankrupt in 1957.From The Encyclopedia of Antique Sewing Machines, 3rd Edition Eldredge Sewing Machines 1880s Vibrating Shuttle Sewing Machines 1880s-1890s Vibrating Shuttle Sewing Machines 1900s-1920s Vibrating Shuttle Sewing Machines 1920s-1930s Rotary Sewing Machine Chain Stitch Sewing Machine Two Spool Sewing Machine Copyright © 1996-2001 by Charles Law (Webmaster).
